On August 11, 2026, Mr. Washington died following a medical emergency while responding to the Bear Trap Fire near Ely, Minnesota. Mr. Washington was from Noorvik, Alaska, and was a member of the Inupiaq people of the Northwest Arctic. Mr. Washington displayed courage and dedication beyond measure, exemplifying the service of all firefighters across the state and nation.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the State Capitol Complex and upon all public buildings and grounds across the state of Michigan to be lowered to half-staff on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, to honor the life and service of Detroit Fire Fighter Patrick Trout, who passed away in the line of duty. “Patrick Trout was a proud family man and dedicated public servant,” said Governor Whitmer. “He was an example of the selflessness and dedication firefighters across Michigan demonstrate each and every day. Let’s honor this fallen hero and keep his family and the entire Detroit Fire Department in our thoughts.” Patrick Trout served in the Detroit Fire Department for 12 years, protecting the citizens of Detroit. He was a retired U.S. Army Sergeant who also served in the National Guard and Army Reserves.
